  • Overview

    The Corporate Medical Director serves as a liaison and contact between Caris Healthcare offices, community physicians, Associate Medical Directors, Nurse Practitioners and others engaged in health care services in order to develop and expand awareness and promote improved eligible referrals to hospice.

    Responsibilities

    1. Consults with Caris employees and/or Associate Medical Directors if needed to determine hospice eligibility for admission and/or recertification.
    2. Consults with Caris employees and/or Associate Medical Directors if needed to assist with determining medical necessity in accordance with Caris Policy and Federal Regulations.
    3. Attends via teleconference and actively participates in Interdisciplinary Team Conferences (IDT) on a rotating basis but at least once a year with every Caris IDT. Reviews the active medical care and/or palliative care of patients for the purpose of assisting the IDT to develop an appropriate/effective Plan of Care. 
    4. Provides telephone consultation with hospice personnel concerning patient care techniques, symptom and pain control, procedures and solutions to problems. Provides clinical expertise and participates in IDT team decisions regarding diagnosis and medical management of patient/family needs, assuring the highest quality of medical care is provided, and continuity and comprehensiveness of care is maintained.
    5. Acts as a member of the Ethics and Compliance Committees.
    1. Ensures timely medical decisions, including real time and after-hours consultation as needed.
    2. When requested, assists Caris Administrators in determining effectiveness of Caris Medical Directors by providing peer review for Caris Medical Directors.
    3. Reviews, updates and revises patient care protocols, policies, and Standard Operating Procedures when requested by the Executive team.
    4. Participates in interview and selection process for Associate Medical Director position.
    5. Advises, assists, and participates in the training of hospice Medical Directors and other clinical staff. Attends at least two non-clinical Leadership Development Institutes per year.
    6. Assists VP of Patient Care with planning and active participation of clinical Leadership Development Institute.
    7. Adheres to the practice of confidentiality regarding patients, families, staff, and the organization.
    8. Functions in an advisory capacity to the CEO and Leadership Team.
    9. Provides education and training for Caris employees and Medical Directors on hospice and palliative medicine.
    10. Writes a column for the quarterly Caris Newsletter on relevant topics in hospice and palliative care.
    11. Assist Compliance Officer with appeals to Medical Claims Reviews and Audits.
    12. Assist with oversight and support of Palliative Care program.

    Qualifications

    1. Doctor of medicine or osteopathy degree from an accredited medical school with a current license to practice medicine.
    2. Demonstrated expertise with terminally ill patients and families.
    3. Willing to participate in staff and physician education with regard to the hospice concept and hospice policy.
    4. Good communications, organizational and interpersonal skills, ability to act as a liaison with other physicians.
    5. Basic computer skills.
