The VP of Patient Care oversees the patient services program consistent with Caris HealthCare policies and procedures.  Supervises Regional Director(s) of Clinical Care and ensures they provide high quality clinical support for the clinical staff in the assigned region.


Quality and Performance

  1. Monitors company to ensure that the customer service standards are adhered to in daily operations. Evaluate patient services provided by the Interdisciplinary Team.
  2. Assures and monitors case management aspects of patient care including the approval of the following components within company guidelines: pharmacy, DME, supplies, x-rays,  labs, and other clinical issues that support end of life care.   
  1. Assures assignment of patient care staff based on competency of available personnel. Monitors scheduling of patient care staff to provide adequate coverage to include 24 hour call. Assures adequate staffing resources are available to meet patient care requirements for all four levels of care.  Complies with the staffing model of Caris HealthCare and manages case loads to assure optimal case management.
  2. Determines patient’s appropriateness for admission and re-certification of hospice services consistent with admission criteria in conjunction with Caris medical directors.
  3. Ensures deviations from policy are reported and necessary follow-up steps are taken to ensure compliance.
  4. Promotes Caris HealthCare’s customer service initiatives and monitors assigned branches for compliance.
  5. Maintains knowledge of state licensure, federal certification, and accreditation requirements.
  6. Oversees Standards Service Excellence Team and develops or revises programs to promote high quality patient care.

Auditing & Data Gathering

  1. Assigns Regional Director(s) of Clinical Care to conduct annual audits for each branch location at a minimum; or quarterly audits if needed. Each audit reviews a minimum 10% of active and discharged charts and personnel files.  Provides both oral and written assessment of findings from review activities including an exit interview with Administrator and PCM. 
  2. Monitor services and documentation to meet Hospice policies and procedures, Medicare regulations, and accreditation guidelines.
  3. Provides branch office administrators with periodic written updates on Performance Improvement measures and audits and reviews.  Supervises and coordinates utilization review activities.  Completes systematic collection, review, and evaluation of data pertaining to hospice aspects of care and in accordance with the agency’s performance improvement plan.
  4. Analyzes satisfaction survey responses to identify trends and resolve problem areas.

Training & Education

  1. Ensures quality and effectiveness of personnel and their ability to deliver services through appropriate job orientation, on-the-job training, and education programs. Provide information for inclusion in written performance evaluations in cooperation with appropriate staff members.
  2. Provides general information and inservice training to SNF and hospital staff concerning hospice services, terminal care and joint working relationships.


  1. Is willing and able to accurately utilize any automated device required to document in the electronic medical record.
  2. Fills in for RDCC during vacations, leave of absences, and interim period when these positions are vacant. Be available on-call as required



  1. Must be currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of operation.
  2. Must have earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  3. An advanced degree (MSN, MBA) is preferred.
  4. Previous health care supervisory experience is highly preferred.
  5. Operations management (i.e., P & L responsibilities for a hospice facility, nursing home, etc.) experience is highly preferred.
  6. Three (3) years experience of excellent patient care skills in hospice or palliative care, oncology or home health.
  7. A thorough knowledge of the objectives, framework, organization, and function of a hospice program as well as programs offered by different payors including Medicare, Medicaid, Private Insurance, is preferred.
  8. Possesses teaching ability, strong interpersonal, motivational, and communication skills.
  9. Frequent overnight travel is required.
  10. Position is based in Knoxville TN
